One of the brightest and most accomplished stars in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, Josef Newgarden continues to elevate his legacy among America’s all-time open-wheel greats. A two-time series champion (2017, 2019) and back-to-back Indianapolis 500 winner (2023, 2024), Newgarden has firmly established himself as one of the defining drivers of his generation.

His victory in the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2023 marked the biggest win of his career, and in 2024 he returned to Victory Lane at the Brickyard, becoming just the sixth driver in history – and the first since Helio Castroneves (2001–2002) –  to win the iconic race in consecutive years. Both triumphs came in dramatic fashion on last-lap passes, forever etching his name into Indianapolis 500 history.

In 2024, he added another prestigious achievement to his résumé by contributing to Porsche Penske Motorsport’s overall victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, becoming just the 16th driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Daytona overall.

Since joining Team Penske in 2017, Newgarden has been one of the most consistent and productive drivers in INDYCAR competition. He has won at least one race in every season with the team – a streak extended to nine consecutive years with his victory at Nashville Superspeedway to close out the 2025 season. Entering 2026, he has amassed 29 wins, 18 poles and two championships with Team Penske, establishing himself as the series’ premier oval racer with 18 career oval victories and wins at nearly every oval venue on the schedule. In 2023, he nearly became the first driver in series history to sweep every oval race in a single season.

The 2025 season showcased Newgarden’s resilience and determination. After a strong podium finish to open the year at St. Petersburg, he mounted a bid to become the first driver ever to win three consecutive Indianapolis 500s. Following a qualifying penalty that relegated him to the final row, Newgarden charged forward during the race and contended inside the top 10 before a late fuel pressure issue ended his run. Despite significant mid-season team changes, the No. 2 Astemo/PPG/Shell Powering Progress/Snap-on/XPEL Chevrolet consistently displayed race-winning pace, culminating in an emotional and momentum-building victory at his home track in Nashville to close the year.

Off the track, Newgarden has become one of the most recognizable ambassadors of American motorsport. In 2025, he was prominently featured in national marketing campaigns with INDYCAR’s broadcast partner FOX, including an appearance during Super Bowl coverage.

Newgarden began his racing career at age 13, winning numerous karting titles between 2006 and 2008 at New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana. After competing in Europe, he returned to the United States and captured the 2011 Indy Lights championship with five wins and 10 podium finishes in 14 starts. That performance launched his INDYCAR career in 2012 and set the foundation for his rise to championship success.

Away from the cockpit, Josef is deeply committed to philanthropy. Josef and his wife Ashley founded the Newgarden Family Foundation in 2025 with a mission to support organizations that create opportunities for individuals from all walks of life to reach their fullest potential.  Through NFF, Josef serves as driver ambassador for the SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by Paul Newman, and supports Wags & Walks Nashville, where he and his wife Ashley adopted their dog, Axel. Through race winnings and his annual Smash for Charity ping pong fundraiser, Newgarden has helped raise nearly $1 million for the two organizations.

A travel enthusiast and dedicated athlete, Newgarden maintains an intense year-round fitness regimen that includes strength training, cross-training and rowing. He and Ashley share a love for exploring new cultures, with Japan among their favorite destinations. The couple also collaborated with Red Racer Books to author the children’s books Josef’s BIG Dream and Goodnight Racetrack.

A native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Newgarden and his wife Ashley reside in Nashville with their two young sons.
